Importation of Pets
|
The Pet Travel Scheme allows dogs, cats and ferrets, originating from qualifying countries, to enter Malta without the need for quarantine as long as the requisites specified in the Legal Notice 169/2001 are satisfied. The Pet Travel Scheme only applies to the pets mentoined above.
IFor a pet to enter in Malta it must have:
- An Official Pet Travel Scheme Certificate showing that the pet animal has been micro chipped, vaccinated and blood tested.
- An Official Certificate signed and stamped by a Veterinarian, showing that the pet animal has been treated against tapeworms and ticks, indicating the date and time of the treatment.
- An Official Declaration stating that the pet animal has not been outside the qualifying countries.

Once a 6 month period passes from when the Veterian takes a blood sample and has a positive sieroneutralization titre test result, a pet will be allowed to enter Malta. Should a pets’ owner decide to move to Malta prior to the six months from the blood test, the pet will need to stay in quarantine for 21 days. This also applies if the pets has been vaccinated against Rabies but did not have a blood test. The above only applies for qualifying countries without geographical boundaries, which include United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. |

Should a pet be imported from a country which does not qualify for the Pet Travel Scheme, the pet will be held at the quarantine department for a 6 month period. Such countries include Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Latvia.
All dogs, cats and ferrets entering Malta must have an Import Licence issued by the Food and Veterinary Regulation Division in Marsa. Contact Number: (00356) 21 225 638 ext. 371.
